Early Detection of Breast Cancer Saves Lives Details

    By Liz Logan

October, as you might be aware, is Breast cancer awareness month. It is one of those diseases which, unless one close to us is suffering from, we know very little about. It is something we do not want to openly discuss - perhaps from fear? But lets face it, some things we have to discuss whether we like it or not.

For long, cancer has been some thing we thought only affected older women, but that could not be further from the truth. Statistics show that the age of women getting breast cancer has dropped from the above 50 age bracket to as low as 29. Scary, isn't it? but that is not why we should discuss breast cancer.

One of the reasons we need to bring it into the open is because it can be prevented, and if it is detected early, it can be treated and one can actually be cured of it. one key element in the fight against breast cancer is early detection. how can we do this? The simplest way is by doing a self breast exam. Look out for change in colouration around the nipples, abnormal lumps in your breast, and any other strange thing you may notice. Report these to your doctor immediately. With early treatment, there is definitely hope.

For the men, it is important that your wife, mother, sister, daughter, friend - whoever she may be to you - gets breast cancer, all they need is your emotional support to get her through. And do not neglect to get support yourself because you need help in dealing with the fact that she has the disease. The most important thing to remember is: Early detection saves lives. Let's all be vigilant.
