    By Cecile Ewing

Undertakers, also called Funeral Directors, are experts who organize activities and services related to funerals. Some of the necessary skills and traits that are required by people who are in this job are listed below.

As he may be needed at any hour of the day, an undertaker must be ready to work at odd hours also. This is essentially an outdoors job, which will need him to be outside the office for long hours.

The undertaker should be able to understand the feelings of clients, listen and understand their needs and communicate lucidly. With clients hailing from many religions, cultures and communities he must be able to communicate with and handle each one of them efficiently. He should be compassionate and must understand others' feelings. However, he must be mentally strong and not get carried away by other people's grief, so that he can offer emotional support to them.

Although the job is by nature serious and distressful, the undertakers must bring dignity and serenity to the funeral service instead of more sorrow or sadness through their demeanour.

By nature, undertakers should be broad minded. They should be willing to respect the faith and beliefs of all religions and must be knowledgeable in this field. They should be aware of different customs and practices followed by various sects during the funeral service.

Good management and the power to organise are important skills for an undertaker. Many services will need to be organized by the undertaker and this will need good communication and management skills from the undertaker.

As the undertaker will be in charge of getting all clearances and adhering to all regulations with respect to the event, he will need to be well versed in such procedures and legal formalities. The essential rules and formalities to be completed to get a death certificate or to file insurance claims must also be known to him.

Finally, he should necessarily be able to and be eligible to drive vehicles such as hearses and limousines during the funeral ceremony.
